Gary's Posting

Tuesday, Oct. 13th

Hola -

We have just finished our morning review of the weekend retreat and Enneagram training with the ICC team. Adele and Doug led about 25 ICC leaders in an enthusiasticly received training that culminated on Sunday. A high point of the weekend, however, was Doug's message on Sunday evening at the ICC seeker service. He spoke of Christ's invitations from Matthew 9 and closing with a moving and very effective "altar call", where upon dozens of seekers came forward to answer the call. Who knew Doug has this fabulous gift? Now he needs to try it out on the rocky soil here in New England....

This morning we also prayed for the ICC team, its leadership and the Del Camino Connection leadership, and for the indivual needs of many of the people we met during our week here. Great energy here and much in the way of accomplishments in the colonial sector of Santo Domingo, where the needs are great and resources limited.

We look forward to sharing more of our experience on Sunday the 18th at RCC when Adele will deliver the message and we all will pitch in with our Enneagram learnings. We have a lot of pictures to share as well after ther service sometime.

Hope to see you all Sunday! We miss you.

Blessings,
Gary and the Team

Reflections from Home

A Summary of the trip from Adele 10-15-09

How do we answer the question -- "So what was your trip like?" It was a different trip for each one of us. And we hope you will ask us about what happened. But for those who want a quick glance I'll try to put it on the head of a pin.

We arrived Wed. around 5 in the afternoon as our flight from San Juan Puerto Rico was cancelled. In the evening the church brought us dinner. We sat on the roof of the hotel and listened to what they were hoping would happen while we were in town. And we prayed that indeed what they hoped for would happen.

Thursday was a day of exploring ICC and the variety of ministries they offer. ICC has started a gym. The gym employs people, reaches out to people, and offers an affordable service with in the community. The church cooks for and feeds the homeless a huge meal five days a week. At night they pull beds wired to the parking lot wall down for homeless people to sleep on. They provide the bedding, wash the bedding, and tuck the folks in bed. There is also a restaurant that the church started which supplies work for people in the community. We had a very tasty meal there as well.

In the evening the team spoke at the Thursday service for believers. We wanted to introduce the topic of transformation -- how we cooperate with God in the healing and growth process. Each person introduced who they were on a good day AND who they were on a bad day. Then I talked about Peter. He thought he knew himself. He thought he would never betray Jesus. He thought he was who he was on a good day. But at Jesus' trial he found out who he was on a bad day. Then we looked at the passage in John 21 on how Jesus called Peter to live into tending his sheep even when he couldn't live up to his own ideals. It was a good service. And we reconnected with old friends. We each met in a small group with the Dominicans afterwards and had pretty good discussions further in the topic.

Friday we left for the retreat, a long drive up into the mountains. Thank God for a driver that knows Dominican ways. Alfredo kept us out of accidents -- and kept others out of accidents as well. One motorcyclist was headed straight into us. And if Alfredo had not been quick that guy would have ended up face first on the windshield.

We had nearly 30 people on retreat with us. We were very nervous about how the Enneagram would translate into a different culture and through Spanish translation. But the Dominicans dove in with both feet.

Meal conversations included how the Enneagram worked in parenting.

Folks lined up to talk to the team about their numbers and how to interact with spouses. Pano and Jan are the same numbers as Vickie and her husband Alfredo. Vickie felt like Pano and Jan gave her help with her marriage -- because she understood her husband better.

The D.R. team was grateful for the help and seemed really pleased with the understanding they were gaining about themselves, Robert (the senior pastor) and their family life.Group_discussion_Sat.jpg

[Saturday night a thief broken into Tom and Dee's house. Dee was with us; Tom was at home with the kids. They slept through the whole thing. Computers were stolen, video camera etc. It was terrifying for them.

Sunday evening Doug led the service and Jan and Gary gave their testimonies. Newly_Baptized_Dance.jpg
The Holy Spirit was in the house. Thank you for prayers. They were so important and we know that God heard them.
Who_s_on_t..n_list_.jpg
Doug gave an altar call at the end. People came forward to receive salvation and recommit their lives to Jesus. A friend of Robert's came forward who he had prayed for a long time. He is a body builder who came to the gym.

We rejoice in what God did. We rejoice that you who stayed behind were really with us in spirit and in prayer. Thank you for holding us in your heart and in the heart of God. I know the Dominican's want to tell you that they wouldn't be able to have this sort of input if it wasn't for you generosity. They cannot afford to go on a retreat. They cannot afford to have people come and resource them. But it is a pleasure for us to go. And we are all grateful -- you have made it happen. Adele

First Day in the DR

sunny

Hola!!

Its great to be back in the DR. Our trip down was relatively uneventful -- only one flight cancellation -- getting us into the DR a few hours late. It could have been much worse.

No sooner do we step down off the plane then we are hit with the hot, humid climate of the DR. And the rain. It pours with streets ending up half submerged and the folks on scooters or walking completely drenched.

(And as I write this blog entry, the power has just gone out -- a regular occurrence in the DR.)

Adele and Doug and Jan and I enjoyed reconnecting with Alfredo the logistics coordinator of Endeavor and our trip. He is a wonderful human being with a real heart for God and soon-to-be-married!!!. We peppered him with questions about his finance, who is moving down to the DR as part of the big move.

We had a wonderful evening at our hotel - Hotel Europa -- a simple, clean hotel with a wonderful terrace where we gather for meals. Prior to dinner, Adele and Doug led us in a set of questions about this trip -- (1) What do you hope to experience while you are here, and (2) what do you fear on this trip.

As always, their leadership allowed us to speak freely and candidly. We all pointed to variations on a common theme -- we all want to experience the touch of God and His purpose in our lives. And with respect to fear, I shared a concern that this trip would have a lasting impact. I have been part of way too many HR profile tests (Meyers Briggs, Whole Brain…) where the learnings were forgotten with a month of the program.

This morning Adele engaged us in a reflection/lexio of the story of Bartemeus, the blind beggar. I was struck by how, once again, Jesus asks Bartemeus an open-ended question. He does not say, “Do you want to be healed?”, which could be answered with a simple yes or no, but rather “What do you want me to do for your?” A challenging question!!

We are now at ICC, having toured the church and grounds and amazed at the plans for a new building for their current Montessori school. It will be magnificent and serve a huge need in their neighborhood, well beyond their current school. It is wonderful to hear their stories about the current impact the school has had and its future impact.

A great first day.

News of the day-- from Adele

At lunch time ICC feeds around 80-90 homeless people. Jan and Susan worked in the kitchen with Vicki preparing the meal. Then we all helped served the people. Since last year, they have also hooked up beds to the wall of their parking lot The beds can be let down for night and hooked back up for the day.

Thursday evening we joined ICC at their weekly service for believers. ICC meets in what used to be a theater. And as folks trickled in we rejoiced to see friends from past years. We were fitted with translation head sets so we could understand Spanish. Everyone of us talked at the service last night. We spoke of who we were on our best days and who we were on our worst days.
Adele_preaching.jpgGary_s_example.jpgJan___team..xamples.jpg
The distance between those two days is our path for transformation with Jesus. If we don't take into account where we are at our worst then we tend to just barge along in life doing whatever pops into our heads. And we don't cooperate with Jesus.
Pano_s_life_example.jpgSusan_s_example.jpg

After the service--which is for their already committed Christians--they break up into small groups by gender and age. We were assigned to be in one of those groups. I was with the married women. They shared their best and worst days and we all prayed for one another. It was a sweet time. Then we walked home --- dark and warm the night.
Today we leave for the staff retreat. We have around 28 people joining us. And we look forward to talking to them about the nueve-gram. 9-gram. (Enneagram)

It has been a delight to be with the team. Though we miss our Spanish translator Anna. Furthermore, people ask us if she is with us. Pray for us that we will be able to minister to these wonderful people in spite of our language barriers. adele
